Prize Payouts

These are the approximate and/or final prizes for The NewlyDead Game 2014!

Adjustments will be made to these amounts at the end of the game when it is determined how many Metabolically Challenged rosters we end up with. Remember, every roster that ends the game with 30 team members who are, warm-blooded, have a heartbeat, in other words, alive and well (actually, they don't have to be that well), gets their entry fee returned as a reward. These awards will be subtracted from the PRIZE POOL first and then the amoumts will be adjusted accordingly. When, if at such time, every roster has at least one hit then these amounts will become FINAL !!!

42 Rosters  x  $25     $1,050.00

Stiffs We Missed

After anyone even marginally famous dies I am always asked by my friends, who know I am in a Death Pool game, “did you have so-and-so on your team?” Sadly, for those listed below, I reply that I didn’t, nor did any of us. Here are a few of the “Stiffs We Missed".....

December

01/00 Bobby Keys Age 70 - American saxophonist for bands like The Rolling Stones. It is his screaming sax solo you hear on John Lennon's hit song - “What Ever Gets You Through the Night” that is, interestingly enough, out of key. Yet it sounds perfect for the song.

May

Sir Jack Brabham Showing once again to trust your instincts when picking potential stiffs for your team rosters, Sir Jack was having some serious health issues and was on my radar but for some reason I did not play him on any of my rosters for 2014. Neither did anyone else. The three time Formula 1 champ died at the age of 88.

Ross Lonsberry One of the original Broad Street Bullies of the Philadelphia Flyer hockey teams that won two Stanley Cups in the 1970'as died at the age of 67.

Robert Sallee Age 82. A special missed opportunity selection for me, Mr Sallee was the last living survivor of the Mann Gulch fire of 1949. He was born just 13 days after my own father who in 1949, was 18 years old, like Mr Sallee, his whole life in front of him. Mr Sallee was lucky enough to live to be an old man, like my father. Most of his buddies were not so lucky. If you have never heard of the Mann Gulch fire it is worth reading the fantastic book “Young Men and Fire” about the tragic deaths of all but three smoke jumpers who parachuted into the Montana wilderness in summer 1949 to fight a fire and were killed by the fire instead. Sallee and two others were the only ones to out race the fire and survive. I've been playing Mr. Sallee, on and off, on some of my Death Pool rosters ever since I started partaking in these morbid affairs. I didn't play him this year of course, though he did enter my mind when picking my 2014 rosters, as he always did. People like Sallee and Stolier fascinate me because as “last living survivors” of historic events, they are the only ones who can still talk to us about what happened. When they die, the event passes from living memory, into history. Goodbye Mr Sallee, now you can join the rest of your fellow smoke jumpers, young men who died way back in 1949, far too young to be left on a lonely and desolate Montana mountain.

Donald Levine eveloper of the first action figure that all of us who were boys in the 1960’s had to have – GI Joe – checks out at the age of 86. The last sighting of my GI Joe was around 1968 when I left him precariously hanging by his fingers on the metal bars of a storm sewer grate. Now that was a real action figure for you. Thanks Mr Levine.

April

04/26 Lee Marshall Professional wrestling announcer. He is most famous for being the man who inherited the coveted job of doing the voice of Tony the Tiger after the death of longtime Tony the Tiger voice great Thurl Ravenscroft (a Death Pool legend who died in 2005). He was 67-68ish.

04/25 Earl Morrall Baltimore Colt and Miami Dolphin quarterback Earl Morrall died at the age of 79. Morrall may have been the man who threw Super Bowl III when the Colts played the New York Jets in the game Joe Namath “guaranteed” the Jets would win against the heavily favored Colts. If he did throw the game for the Jets, thus opening the door for the merger of the upstart American Football League with the NFL, he took it to his grave. But one thing is for sure - Morrall was the QB behind the 1972 undefeated Miami Dolphins team, an accomplishment no other NFL QB can claim (an undefeated/untied season). Morrall was QB for most of the 17 games the Dolphins won that year, and earned both Player of the Year and Comeback Player of the Year honors, which he richly deserved.

04/21 Win Tin Award-winning journalist, Burmese dissident and prisoner Win Tin died at the age of 85.

04/20 Rueben (Hurricane) Carter Rueben, “Hurricane” Carter, the boxer wrongfully jailed for murder and who was the “Hurricane” in the Bob Dylan song “Hurricane” died at the age of 76

04/11 Jesse Winchester Singer songwriter Jesse Winchester died at the age of 69 from unreported bladder cancer - something all Death Pool researchers hate (secret celebrity cancer diagnosis').

04/08 The Ultimate Warrior James Hellwig, better known as the Ultimate Warrior, the Hall of Fame pro wrestler, died at the age of 54. He was walking to his car and suddenly dropped over dead of yet unknown causes. He died only three days after being inducted into the Hall of Fame, a real potential deterrent to future Hall of Fame nominees.

04/07 Peaches Geldof The daughter of musician and humanitarian Bob Geldof died suddenly at home at the young age of 25.
